Walk through Cumberland storyimg

Vince Lupo

Learn about Cumberland, Maryland at the Allegany County Museum.

Next, walk to the corner of Mechanic and Harrison streets to the Canal Place Heritage Area, the western end of the C&O Canal. Here you can tour a canal boat and explore the park and towpath. Also at the Canal Heritage Area, enjoy the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, a 1913 railway station.   From the station, a restored 1916 Baltimore train will take you on a three-hour roundtrip ride to Frostburg.

Then walk through Cumberland’s downtown. The buildings along Baltimore Street, built in the late-19th and early-20th centuries, were formerly banks and hotels; now they’re antiques stores, sidewalk cafés, and boutiques.

Stop for lunch at Curtis’ Coney Island Famous Weiners. They’ve been serving hotdogs smothered in their original Coney Island sauce since 1918. After lunch, walk south on Liberty, turn right onto Baltimore, and veer right onto Washington Street to the C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts, a 19th-century Federal-style mansion with six galleries and landscaped gardens.
