About eight years ago, Doug took Larry ice fishing for the first time.
“When he got me out on the ice, it was probably within a half-hour, I caught a pike and I didn’t know they had teeth,” he recalls.
“I stuck my hand down in the fish’s mouth and pulled out the hook. The teeth were so sharp I didn’t feel a thing until I pulled my hand out and I could see the blood dripping off of my fingers.”
All three men confess to a certain kind of addiction and agree that it takes some mettle, if not a bit of craziness, to spend a day weathering snow and frigid conditions.
Boyd, however, points to the sport’s unique advantage: “You don’t need a boat. You can walk all over the lake if you want to.”
As for Doug, ice fishing has become a quest.
“I’m always looking for the state record to come out of that hole,” he says.
“Some people think you should be out for the experience. Well, I’ve had the experience for 30 years. Now it’s time to catch the big one.”
