Black Eyed Susan Day 2011

Black-Eyed Susan Day

For the second consecutive year, Old Hilltop will be accentuated by shades of pink as Pimlico Race Course and Maryland’s Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliate team up to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research on Black-Eyed Susan Day, May 20th.

An encore to last year’s wildly successful event—which drew 27,609 fans and raised $100,000—the People’s Pink Party will feature a full day of live racing, ceremonies, and music. Seventy-five percent of funds generated will go to Maryland’s Komen affiliate, with the remainder going to lifesaving research.

In addition to the 87th running of the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (Grade 2) for 3-year-old fillies, a highlight of the card will be the Lady Legends for the Cure Race II. The 2010 Lady Legends was the first-ever pari-mutuel race showcasing eight retired champion female jockeys, including two breast cancer survivors, Patti “PJ” Cooksey and hometown favorite Mary Wiley Wagner, both of whom return to the starting gate this year.

New to Black-Eyed Susan Day is the Female Jockey Challenge, a four-race points-based competition. In the saddle will be six of the world’s top female jockeys, among them Forest Boyce, Maryland’s leading 2010 apprentice rider, and Rosie Napravnik, currently the second leading rider in North America.

Off-track, the People’s Pink Party will welcome 87 breast cancer survivors as guests to Pimlico, where they will be honored in a special winner’s circle tribute. The newly crowned Miss Preakness Pink Warrior, a nod to Candy Coburn’s anthem, “Pink Warrior,” will also be on hand for the festivities.

Other events include an autograph session with all 14 Lady Legends and Jockey Challenge riders, as well as a handicapping seminar with ESPN’s Jeannine Edwards, a Cecil County resident, and HRTV’s Joanne Jones.

Additionally, Turfside Terrace guests will be treated to a live concert by country music stars Steel Magnolia and the Lunabelles. The performance will be hosted by Laurie DeYoung of WPOC 93.1, the official sponsor of the Turfside Terrace.

Pimlico will donate 10 percent of all Black-Eyed Susan Day Turfside Terrace ticket sales to Komen Maryland.
