2007
The Aberdeen B&O Railroad station has been relocated. The Historical Society of Harford County and the Aberdeen Room and Museum continue partnering to restore the station.
Community efforts to find a buyer and ensure the long-term preservation of the Lonaconing Silk Mill (Allegany County) are still active despite the summer 2010 theft of thousands of dollars of brass from the mill.
A Montgomery Preservation Inc. spokesperson reports that the Comsat building’s owners have promised to keep the main building intact and develop around it. However, the property is sporting “for sale” signage.
Washington County approved funding to rehabilitate the Barnes Road Bridge in its existing form. The project is due to be completed in May.
Baltimore Heritage engaged architect Anne Raines to assess the conditions of the historic Sellers Mansion in Baltimore City, which is owned by the St. James Community Development Corporation. Due to 2010’s record-breaking snow and harsh winter weather, the building continues to deteriorate. The owners are currently reviewing the best course for preserving the mansion.
In July 2010, the Howard County Council approved plans for development in a corner of the Doughoregan Manor. The plan allows for up to 325 homes to be built on 221 acres in the northeast corner of the 892-acre site.
2008
The Bel Air Academy and Graded School was transferred to Harford County from the school board and is expected to be renovated for community use. The building has been stabilized.
In December, the U.S. Army issued a Record of Environmental Consideration (REC) stating that Corporate Office Properties Trust (COPT), owner of the Camp Ritchie Historic District site, issued a new master plan calling “for adjustments to the previous plan, some of which are in response to complaints about the plan by members of the public.” The most important change is no construction of office buildings on Fort Ritchie’s historic parade ground. The REC also states that COPT consulted with Maryland’s State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO). The SHPO has approved “use of the parade ground as an athletic field for sports.”
The Carver Heights USO/Community Center suffered a partial collapse and was torn down. In June 2010, a playground was dedicated on the site. Advocates for its preservation are working to erect a monument to the center at the site.
Restoration of the buildings and equipment of the Double Mills in Wicomico County is still needed. Preservationists continue to work to raise awareness of the site in the community.
Architectural and engineering studies are still needed to restore and protect the Gardner's Cottage in Baltimore City, as are additional fundraising efforts.
The necessary funds to commission the restoration plan for the Skipjack Flora A. Price, which relocated from Caroline County to Dorchester County, have been raised. This plan provides the tools needed to proceed with major fundraising for restoration. Once completed and launched, another 100-year-old skipjack will grace the Choptank River.
2009
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) are working out a memorandum for restoration of Washington County’s Brumbaugh‐Kendle‐Grove Farmstead. As of December 2010, the FAA, along with the airport and the MHT, planned to create an action plan for adaptive reuse or relocation of the farmhouse, barn, and outbuildings.
The Eastern Shore Land Conservancy (ESLC) had obtained an option contract in June 2010 allowing them 90 days to raise the funds needed or find a buyer for the eventual protection of Friendship Hall in Dorchester County. That contract expired in September. The ESLC continues to seek suggestions for buyers or major donors.
The Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance continues to research and to seek funding for restoration of Dorchester County’s Handsell House. A preservation plan for the house, which includes a structural engineer’s report, was completed in 2010.
