It’s more than a little bawdy, but this is truly a family-oriented event, and a festive day away. Says Martine Long, who drove in from Hockessin, Delaware, with husband Eric and their two kids, “It’s fun. I like the dressing up, and it’s interesting that so many people are into it.
“It’s a very popular fair.”
It’s true. Graybeard’s legend and Rock Hall’s weekend are catching on—it’s become a very large event in a short time. Joan Howry, who owns a summer home in Rock Hall, isn’t surprised.
“The costumes are a wonderful draw, and the old, decorated boats are fabulous,” says the first-time festival-goer.
Homes, too, are decked out in accordance with the pirate theme (more skulls), and even bicyclists who, at first glance, appear to be on a regular weekend ride, coast by the revelry with gold beads around their necks.
Saturday ends with more merrymaking, costume contests, and raffles at the Buccaneer’s Ball at Waterman’s Crab House, and revelers rest up for Sunday’s town-wide treasure hunt and, yes, another costume contest (this time for pets and kids). Because when it comes to pirating, aye, it really is all about the costumes.
This year’s Pirates & Wenches Fantasy Weekend takes place Aug. 13-15 in Rock Hall. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.rockhallpirates.com.
