A regular contributor to Maryland Life, Machacek has a new book out, The Science of Single, in which the DC-based freelancer chronicles the year she spent adopting tried-and-true coupling methods, from e-dating to speed-dating.
The result? An honest, funny, and sometimes cringe-worthy account of just how well (or not so well) these “scientific” approaches to finding true love pan out in real life.
Does the experiment mean Machacek is now an expert on all things dating? Not necessarily. But she has a great suggestion for Free Staters hoping to show a potential Mr. or Ms. Right a good time on their first outing.
“I tend to get nervous on first dates, so I prefer an easy, informal setting. One of my favorite date places is Royal Mile Pub in Silver Spring,” she says. “The table by the fireplace is gold. So cozy.”
Not that first dates must be indoor affairs.
“When you date a lot, the typical dinner-and-drinks equation can get tired,” says Machacek. “I had a hiking date on the Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls once. It was a first date and a blind date, and it was awesome.
“There was no ‘staring each other down’ across a table. Instead, we scrambled over rocks and chatted to get to know one another.”
But did that awesome excursion—or, perhaps, a different date—lead to Machacek finding The One? You’ll just have to read the book!
