Christmas in St. Michaels Parade

If shopping in an over-crowded, frenzied mall or sitting at your computer ordering Uncle George a cardigan sweater hasn’t exactly put you in the holiday spirit, then consider spending this weekend in St. Michaels. Our picturesque eastern shore village will be lit up with holiday lights and filled with small-town Christmas cheer for the 25th annual Christmas in St. Michaels celebration.

The festivities begin Friday, December 9, with the opening of the Marketplace featuring hand-crafted gifts, unique garden items, home décor, and specialty foods. The Gingerbread House display featuring many handmade gingerbread houses, most of which are for sale, will also open on Friday. The Holiday Gala, a black-tie event at Harbortowne Resort and Conference Center, will take place Friday night.

The celebration on Saturday, December 10, will begin early with a children’s Breakfast with Santa at the Town Dock Restaurant on Mulberry Street followed by the Talbot Street Holiday Parade at 10:30 a.m. The parade will feature horse-drawn carriages, bands, floats, and, of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus.  Santa’s Wonderland will be open afterwards. Children can have their picture taken with Santa and buy gifts for mom and dad at the Secret Santa Shop.

Christmas in St. Michaels’ very popular Tour of Homes will begin at noon on Saturday and will be offered on Sunday as well. It features historic homes and waterfront estates.  The historic homes in town are within walking distance of each other; the estate homes are accessible by shuttle bus, which is included in the ticket price.

Saturday afternoon, the Jackson Jubilee singers will be performing at the Union United Methodist Church. The church will also host an Old Fashioned Eastern Shore Christmas dinner in the parish hall on Saturday evening. Takeout is available.

Other weekend activities include the Christmas Bazaar at Christ Church parish house, the Talbot County Free Library’s annual book sale, and a special display of antique toys, running model trains, and a commemorative display, “25 Years in the Spirit of Giving,” about Christmas in St. Michaels at the St. Michaels Museum.

To celebrate the 25th year of Christmas in St. Michaels, local authors Mala Burt and Laura Ambler, assisted by Santa, will present their new book, The Santa Diaries, Memories of a Small Town Christmas, for sale and signing at the St. Michaels Harbor Inn, Marina and Spa.

The final event of the weekend is the Celebration of Choirs on Sunday night from 6-7 p.m. at St. Michaels Catholic Church, featuring choirs from local churches.
