Cycle for Survival

MSK Cycle for Survival

Cycle for Survival, an indoor team cycling fundraising event, is riding to Maryland for the first time this Sunday. Colleen Fisher of Chevy Chase and her team, Rockstar, will join hundreds of area residents at Equinox in Bethesda to honor loved ones and raise money for rare cancer research led by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSK).

Colleen, an Equinox cycling instructor, lost a close friend to T-cell lymphoma in 2008. After struggling for four years with how to honor him, she assembled a team of local friends and rare cancer survivors to participate in Cycle 2012.

Cycle for Survival was founded in 2007 by Jennifer Goodman Linn and her husband, Dave, to raise money for research into rare cancers at MSK. Having been diagnosed with sarcoma, a soft tissue cancer, Jen was surprised to learn that more than half of all cancer diagnoses in the United States are classified as rare, and research is often underfunded, leaving patients with limited treatment options. Leukemia, lymphoma, brain, pancreatic, ovarian and all pediatric cancers are considered rare forms of cancer. Jennifer Goodman Linn passed away in July 2011.

To date, Cycle for Survival has raised more than $15 million and funded 25 clinical trials and research studies led by MSK. Within six months of the event, every dollar raised is allocated, which means patients quickly see the benefits of donations in the form of new clinical trials and investigational treatment options.

With the support of MSK and founding sponsor, Equinox, Cycle for Survival has quickly grown into a national event taking place in six cities this year, including Bethesda. The event will take place Sunday, February 12, 2012 at Equinox Bethesda (4905 Elm Street, 301-652-1078) from 8 am – noon. To register a team or donate, visit www.cycleforsurvival.org.
