Wineries? Did you know there are several on the lower shore? There’s actually an eastern shore wine trail, the Chesapeake Wine Trail, that extends from Cecil County on the northern end to just outside of Ocean City.
I stopped at two of the wineries on a recent trip to Ocean City. The first was Layton’s Chance in Vienna. In their tasting room, I tried several of their wines, including Joe’s Cool Red, a sweet rose named for owner Joseph Layton, Jr., who happened to be there that day and stopped to say hi. In between sips, I munched on chocolate rocks. Yes, they looked exactly like rocks but tasted like candy-coated chocolate pieces. Perfect complement to any red wine.
My next stop was Costa Ventosa in Whaleyville. The folks at Layton’s Chance recommended I stop there on my way into Ocean City since its just 10 minutes outside. I was eager to try the Chardonnay but was surprised to find that I like the Vidal Blanc the best out of their selection of wines. The ladies in the tasting room were very knowledgeable about their wines and the area. They suggested I visit Bordeleaux, also on the lower shore. I didn’t have time to on that day but I plan to on my next trip.
If you’re planning a trip to Ocean City in the off-season, this is a perfect weekend to go. The Autumn Wine Festival is happening Saturday and Sunday in Salisbury and Ocean City’s Restaurant Week starts this Sunday. If you need a place to stay, I highly recommend Cayman Suites. That’s where I stayed on my last trip. It’s perfect for families. This is the last weekend that they are open for the season, though. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until they reopen March 25, 2011 to check it out.
So, will you be headed down the o’shun this weekend? Leave a comment a here and let us know.
