Mormon Temple Festival of Lights

Have you visited the Mormon Temple in Kensington? You know that grand, castle-like building visible from the Capital Beltway? While only members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may enter the temple itself, there is still plenty to see on the grounds and the holiday season is a great time to visit.  Starting December 2, the grounds will be illuminated with a remarkable display of over 500,000 colorful lights during the Temple’s month-long Festival of Lights.

The Temple’s museum-like Visitor’s Center is rather remarkable as well with its numerous interactive displays and state-of-the-art theater.  During the festival, 16 decorated Christmas trees from around the world are on display along with an International Crèche exhibit.  The festival also includes a live nativity outside and musical performances inside the theater.  Each concert showcases a different community group with nightly performances at 7 and 8 p.m.

So whether you’re looking for something to put you in the holiday spirit, curious about the Temple, or just looking for something free to do, check out the Festival of Lights at the Washington DC Mormon Temple.  And don’t forget your camera!

The Temple Visitors’ Center is located at 9900 Stoneybrook Drive in Kensington and open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information about the festival, visit http://dctemplelights.lds.org/ or call 301-587-0144.

  • Temple Roofing

I was General Superintendent of the Maryland division of the Virginia Roofing Corp. at the time of the temple construction and was privileged to manage the roofing installation processes. The main roofing crew consisted of all black men from Baltimore, MD, headed by Mr. Boise Van Diver. They were professionals and took great pride in accomplishing their work and expressed appreciation for the privilege of working on such a beautiful edifice. The roofing is of multiple layer built-up asphalt with white marble chip stone covering. The Temple spire elevations are of 20 oz. copper sheet metal.

It looks so beautiful in the picture! I didn't know so many activities were available during the season. I wish I lived closer. Thanks for the information!
