Thanks to my affiliation with Maryland Life, I was recently asked by a national food magazine to nominate a Maryland pizza for a travel article about pizzas from each of the 50 states. I had been hearing lots of buzz about the square coal-fired pizzas at Joe Squared in Baltimore so I nominated their Flag Pizza.

An homage to the Italian flag, this pizza delights eyes and the tastebuds. Three different sauces – margarita red, garlic white and pesto green – give the flag its color and the cheese combinations gives each slice its distinct flavor. The white slices are my personal favorite, with globs of ricotta puddled with mozzarella and cheddar in a garlic sauce over the coal-fired thin crust. The 12 inch pie is perfect for sharing.

We visited Joe Squared during the early lunch hour on our way to Port Discovery (see related link). While the menu is kid-friendly, the atmosphere during evening hours probably is not. It is, after all, a bar in a downtown neighborhood known for its thriving arts scene. Parents might want to order their pizza to go instead.

Where do you go for pizza in Maryland?

Joe Squared is located at 133 W. North Ave and at their new location at Power Plant Live, both in Baltimore. Their coal-fired pizzas are available for delivery, take-out or dining in. For more information, visit www.joesquared.com.

(Ok, I’ll tell you. The article was for Food Network magazine! Go check out the article and pick up the October issue of Maryland Life, too.)
