We checked into our hotel room Friday evening and scanned the lobby for anyone or anything that looked suspicious. The guests seemed polite, sociable.
“Hi! Nice to meet you. Have you killed anyone lately?”
“Excuse me! Have I what?”
And so began our all-inclusive murder mystery weekend at the Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa.
The weekend kicked-off with a cocktail hour that was interrupted by a scream! A waiter rushed in and said a woman had been murdered. Her name: Mary de Guzman, a widow from New Jersey. Who among us did it and what was the motive? The police were called and a detective arrived. While Detective Ricco investigated the crime scene, a witness discovered a pill bottle – our first lead. Drugs? Poison? After questioning, we left the crime scene and retired to our hotel room for the evening.
The next morning we enjoyed breakfast and explored a few shops in Chesapeake Beach before returning to the hotel for lunch with our fellow witnesses. Then, bang! A man fell to the ground. Eddie Trosono, our next murder victim, had been shot.
The final victim, Adrian Webb, was stabbed just before dinner on Saturday night. After interrogating those around us, we learned that the murders were based on the real-life 1997 mystery of Bre-X geologist Michael De Guzman, whose mining scandal remains unsolved. We spent that evening running down the names of possible suspects and trying to solve the case.
On Sunday morning, we identified who we thought the killers were and their motives. Honestly, we didn’t have a clue, but we gave it our best guess. And we were totally wrong!
We proceeded to breakfast and enjoyed some coffee while saying goodbye to the friends we had made over the course of our stay. Our weekend of relaxation, delicious food and drink, and murder mystery was over. On our way home, my husband and I chatted about our experience and how much fun it was to stretch our imaginations and escape our ordinary weekend routine together.
