One of my most favorite small towns anywhere is Berlin, just a few miles west of Ocean City and Assateague Island National Seashore. This town has a vibrancy and hipness to it that is just infectious. They’ve done their homework and turned the town into a gem of beautifully restored Victorian architecture, a great mix of retail and have a green program that is getting noticed.

Every month on the second Friday the boutiques and galleries stay open til’ 8 and many of the merchants bring in the artists whose work they are showing for a one-on-one meet and greet. Of course, this is usually done over wine and cheese. It’s not just about the arts, though. It’s also a social gathering for locals and visitors to come out, browse and enjoy great company and entertainment – the town sponsors live entertainment on the streets and sidewalks. It’s a very laid-back feel, -- people eating ice cream cones, creating bubbles outside jj fish studio or dining al fresco at the Atlantic Hotel or the Globe.

I look forward to these little outings and use the term straycation to describe it; I only have to stray a little bit from home, spend some money to feel like I got a nice break!
