On a wretchedly hot and humid Saturday in June, my husband and I headed to the eastern shore town of Queen Anne. We were on our way to meet Gwen and David Boyle of Boyle Bee Farm. While both of them hold down full-time day jobs, they also have an impressive beekeeping operation.

There are an estimated 1,200 beekeepers in the Free State, and while that may sound impressive, it is a significant reduction from just a few years ago. Along with raising bees, the Boyles make honey, hand cream and soap. They also rent most of their bee hives to other farmers to help pollinate their crops.

To learn more about how this lovely young couple got into beekeeping and just how the entire process works, stay tuned for my Maryland Life article coming next spring. In the meantime, check out the current issue to read about another Free State company working with bees.
