Aug12 Stinky Beach story

Stephen Cherry

The Worcester County Department of Recreation and Parks’ sign reads “Homer Gudelsky Park,” but to locals, it’s simply Stinky Beach—one of the few year-round, dog-friendly area beaches.

“Stinky Beach received its nickname from fish waste that would wash up on shore from the nearby fish docks and commercial maritime activities in West Ocean City,” says Carol J. Cain, technical coordinator for the Maryland Coastal Bays Program.

But that was a half-century ago.

Visible from the Route 50 bridge, this football-field-sized beach provides panoramic views of Sinepuxent Bay and Ocean City. Adjacent Martha’s Landing (named for the late philanthropist and widow of Homer Gudelsky, whose family donated the land) features luxurious million-dollar homes, many with private piers.

Visit Stinky Beach and, from sunrise to sunset, your leashed pet can enjoy the sand, small waves, and marshy area with all their glorious scents. Several “doggie bag” dispensers and trashcans are available, with a potential $100 fine as motivation to use them.

So don’t leave Stinky Beach stinky.

Stinky Beach

Plus, the beach offers a panoramic view of Ocean City. And you can enjoy concerts and fireworks from across the bay. BYO blanket!
